We're considering putting Logan on the B6/Maganesium vitamins (he's done so well with changing his diet to the cf/gf that we want to see if this will help too). Because he doesn't take pills we're looking at the Kirkland labs liquid "Super Nu-Thera".
Any experiences with vitamins or this brand/company?

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 3:09 PMI know! Too bad, too. I'd love a list of all the things we'd need to do, and then we can just do them. I really would.
Did she have any adverse affects? Any reason not to at least try it?

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 6:30 PMOur son has been getting vitimin B12 injections for about six months, and I must say that he has been making great developmental leaps. Back to vocalizing things like "dada" and "mama". Not with communicative intent, but about like a one year old (like his sister, in fact) will do when they're just practicing to themselves.
I honestly can't say whether it's the vitimin therapy that'd helping or if he just hit a point through school and therapy that he just started to progress. But we're leaving him on the therapy. My mother-in-law found a doctor (www.drneubrander.com) who recommends it and swears by it (don't they all?). Be careful with so-called mega-doses of vitimin B. Our developmental pediatrician said that mega-doses of vitimin b, when taken orally a) don't absorb very well at all and b) can sometimes cause a numbing of fingers and toes that doesn't go away until the vitimin therapy is ended.
We're only doing it under the (long-distance) supervision of my father-in-law. -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 12:27 PMHey all... we're trying Super-Nu Thera Hypo-allergenic vitamins again...
I want to revise and extend my previous remarks about it not working...
Apparently it does work for Molly... She looks healthier (she used to have dark circles under her eyes) and just seems to have more better days...
The reason we stopped is that the original (non-hypo-allergenic) version was making her hyper... she's not nearly so hyper now. -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 2:44 PMAn update:
We've got him on DMG with Bcomplex and Folinic Acid. It's a liquid, we give him 1 tsp in the morning in his soy milk, and he doesn't notice.
He is more hyper, certainly, but his eye contact has improved, he's starting to say words, and his therapists are now calling him "high functioning" and starting to talk about how he'll be in a regular classroom in elementary school. These same folks were talking about how he had a lot of behaviours and was going to need so much therapy, only two months ago.
He's got a long way to go, but if this supplement is helping him be more aware and learn, then I'll take his hyperness anyday. -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 9:28 AMMY boy has always ben a little bit hyper. He also gets the B complex with folic acid, but he gets the injection. We were warned about the oral b complex as it tends to make their extremities, like fingers and toes numb in high doses, which these arguably are. I'd keep an eye on him and look for more hand-flapping or toe walking (more than normal anyway), because that may be an indicator. -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 10:40 AMHe actually seems to have less, but I'll keep an eye out for it.
We started him at 1 tbsp per day, the dose recommended is two per day, but we're holding off on increasing it until we see if this is something that he becomes used to, where he'd need a higher dose for the same effects.

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 11:46 AMHi,
My son is 4 and does hand flapping and toe walking (sometimes when is excited). It seems your son also did according to your September 5 2005 post. You also mentioned in June 2005 post that you had him on B12 shots and he was doing great then.
1. Have you seen improvements with B-12 shots in terms of speech, hand flapping or toe walking?
2. Also what kind of nutritional supplements and medicines is he on?
3. Does he get chelation?
We are thinking of starting him on B-12 but are not sure if we want to. Thank you in advance..
Regards... -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 12:03 PMNo, my son doesn't really hand-flap or toe-walk. Never really did.
We have been giving him the injections for about a year and a half, but I sincerely do not believe at this point that they're impacting him one bit. My husband continues to give them, though. Just in case, I guess. In October we started him in an ABA program that has had a dramatic impact on his eye contact and speech. Still doesn't communicate functionally, but he's labeling things, identifying objects, singing, knows I'm mama, knows dada etc. Generally doing very well, but still miles and miles away from his typical peers.
I can't say for sure that the injections didn't make a small difference or that they won't make a difference for other children, but it was clear that getting him into the right educational program was really what he needed.
My opinions of the alternate therapies are changing quite a bit. I am more and more of the opinion that there are a hundred snake-oil salesmen out there, looking to take advantage of the desperation of people in our shoes. Maybe some of these "cures" will work, but at what cost? At subjecting our children to a barrage of experiments? To make them more "normal"? I'm to the point now where I see the purveyors of these therapies as car salesmen, trying to sell us what they have, regardless of how useful it will be to us.
I want my son to speak, more than anything else in the world, that is what I cross my fingers and hope for. Every shooting star, every coin tossed into a fountain, every prayer. Every childish method you can think of where you permitted yourself to wish for something from the deepest recesses of your psyche, I have employed to wish my son could communicate. But all that wishing mounts up to about the same result as the various "alternative" therapies we have tried. But it costs a lot less.
Sorry. I know you didn't ask for a tirade on alternative therapies. I guess this has all been cranking around in my head for a while and it just needed to get out. I guess I should thank you for helping me release it. -

Re: Vitamins for Autism?
Sat, July 1, 2006 - 11:43 AMI agree about the "snake oil salesman"...you can get a placebo effect from/for just about anything. I think, at this point, ed type therapies are the best bet - I'm done putting extra things into my childrens bodies to "cure" their "problems". Psychotropic meds are prescribed for symptoms not causes...I doubt the vitamins would hurt but all things in moderation....I don't want to teach my kids that pills can solve all problems. There ARE proper uses for meds - I'm not saying that there aren't....I'm just saying that as a parent and a teacher I'm sick of seeing their gross overuse

Mon, March 13, 2006 - 5:10 PMThat is some good stuff! I used an eyedropper to ramp up when my son first started, but now he takes the teaspoonfull without a complaint! He will even open the fridge and ask for it!
