accessible gardening

Hi. Anyone here with a kid in a wheelchair? My husband and I are looking into setting up a wheelchair accessible garden for our eleven year-old daughter who has cerebral palsy. My husband and I just started exploring ideas. Is there a tribe that deals specifically with this topic? I am also interested in gardening, just in general, and this would be a way I could share my interest with our ablebodied younger daughter and our older, handicapped daughter, alike.

You can build a table to grow on. I've seen em in my neighborhood and they look perfect for your needs. Just find out the comfortable height you'd need. Get 4 corner brackets designed to fit 3 2"x4"'s. Get 4 3' x2"x4"s for legs, 2 6'x 2"x4"s for the lengths, and 2 3'x2"x4" for the depth of the table. Wood screws. Plywood or chicken wire to cover it with. Drill lots of1" holes in the ply wood for drainage. Attach chicken wire with staple gun. Hope this helps.

Thanks. That sounds more or less like what we were thinking about. I will mention this to my husband. We want some parts of the garden that she can call her own. Corner lot so there's plenty of space for both accessible and more traditional gardens.

when my great grandmother's arthritis got bad, my grandad basically put her garden on risers. Think troughs (or pots) on low tables. She was able to either sit in her chair or sit on the step/riser thing next to the plant to weed, pick veggies/fruit, etc

make a box garden with a bottom wire that has legs on it make it at a level and wideth she can reach to.
There is also upside down gardening pots for small gardens -any window type of gardening will work too.
You would have a gardens on shelves with the mesh to cover it .
Even barrow gardening -it is practical for her to manage a smaller type of garden .
I started my kids on sprouting first.
